Where the Systems Thinking Action Learning Team Will Integrate Work and Learning.

The Big Picture

The work of Systems Thinking Action Learning Teams is anchored in the continuum of Strategy > Goals > Performance > Results. Teams derive their own purpose from the purpose of their own workplace, which in turn contributes value to the larger part of the organization of which it is a part.

Select Problem, Project, or Challenge Focus

Systems Thinking Action Learning Teams are most effective when they are tightly focused on a well articulated issue in the workplace. Typically, but not exclusively, this is a problem, a project (defined beginning and end), or a challenge.

In the absence of a tight focus the team is at risk for drifting from one reason for being to another. As a consequence, action and learning become fragmented, and the ability to calculate a Return on Investment declines.

Problem Focus

Problems come in many flavors. The type that is well suited to a Systems Thinking Action Learning Team:

  • Has a history, and is important to the organization.
  • Comes and goes, apparently fixed, only to return.
  • Has generated many theories as to what the real problem is, and everyone thinks they are right.

These problems are ideal for taking the time to think systemically, are fertile ground for learning, and deliver the highest Return on Investment.

Project Focus

Projects are typically related to routine work but not a direct part of the value stream produced in the workplace. They typically are limited in scope and duration. They commonly deal with a defined set of skills and knowledge.

On a targeted basis they are well suited to Systems Thinking Action Learning Teams. Member of the team develop abilities that are transferable to the routine work performance in the workplace.

Challenge Focus

Challenges are less acute than problems, and broader in scope than projects. They refer to activities that relate to the long-term evolution of strategy. They can range from large-scale change projects to intermediate adjustments to goals and performance.

Challenges benefit from the continuity and consistency of Systems Thinking Action Learning Teams. Conversely, action and learning over the long-term make for rich developmental opportunities for people.
